Paper Sent a Reporter To Cedar Falls To Cover a UNI Women's Game That Drew 901 Fans, But Couldn't Find Anyone To Go To Drake Home Game That Drew 1,543

From Bud Appleby of Des Moines: "It appears the Des Moines Register sent a reporter to Cedar Falls on Thursday to cover a Northern Iowa women's basketball game that attracted 901 fans. But it could not find anyone to go the few blocks to the Knapp Center to cover a Drake women's game that drew 1,543 spectators.

"On another matter, I don't know if anyone keeps track of these things, but Fran McCaffery must be leading the nation in technical fouls so far this season.

"But at least his wife Margaret has managed to behave herself. Or, if she hasn't, nobody has bothered to report it.

"When he was a coach at Siena, she was once kicked out of a game after a profanity laced tirade against the game officials. The New York Times reported that she was escorted from the arena. That came after Fran was kicked out of the game for getting his second technical foul.

"On another occasion, she interrupted his post-game press conference to criticize the officiating."

[RON MALY'S COMMENTS: The Register's story on Drake's victory over Southern Illinois was rewritten from the one authored by Brock Ascher of Drake's sports information staff. Ascher's story can be found in its entirety at the right side of this page. He regularly e-mails his stories on Drake women's athletics to me and other news outlets, including newspapers, TV stations and radio stations].
